I just read Pat Benatar’s memoir, Between A Heart and a Rock Place this past weekend. Full disclosure I’m a fan of hers, love her music, grew up with her in the 80′s, saw her in concert twice and I loved this book.
It is a well written book that flows seamlessly through her life and rock and roll career. I was surprised to learn about her personal life, her priority being a mother first and a singer second. As she says in her book you won’t find a scandal about her and she hasn’t had to do the rehab thing either. Not too many entertainers (from the 80′s or today) can say that!
Reading about her relationship and collaboration with her husband Neil “Spyder” Giraldo was refreshing and enlightening to learn how much he has contributed to her (their) success and how they really have put their marriage and family first.
I hear entertainers say all the time that “it’s a business” and Pat Benatar explains what that meant in her world, with contracts, record companies and agents. Oh yea and scummy Radio Station Managers. She definitely fought a few battles regarding being treated with respect and overcoming the mysogony and sexist that was put on her by those in the record industry. Read more…
Hey everyone I’ve been kinda quiet, but it’s all good.
Happy to report that I’ve gone 7 days now without chocolate! Woohoo! A major success for me and with every day that goes by my resolve to continue without it gets stronger (although my niece did make homemade ice cream with Oreo’s in it tonight – I left as they were serving it and I wasn’t even tempted).
Thumbs Up for/from ME!
My eating is better too, although I find that I really have to remind myself to eat (especially lunch) because I’m so used to not eating.
My pants are perhaps a skoosh looser than a week ago.
I am feeling better physically, mentally and emotionally too.
I finally shaved my legs (have been lazy and let the blonde hair grow) and have started putting lotion on my body. Yes I seriously need to reconnect with my body and love it!
I’ve tackled the pile of dirty dishes that have been sitting in my sink and on my cupboard for weeks, (yea they were pretty awful) was going to take a before and after picture to show you but it was just way too disgusting (trust me). I scrubbed down my kitchen sink and counter and feel lighter already with it being clean.
My car windows haven’t been washed in a very long time. I buy my gas at COSTCO where the prices are cheaper than the usual gas station but they are all about moving the cars through the line and have no squeegees and window washing fluid to wash windows with.
I don’t usually notice how dirty and spotted they are until in the evening when the sun hits them at a certain angle. I go on about my business and forget about them until the next evening and so on and so on.
You might be wondering why I don’t just go through a car wash, well I have a cracked windshield and with the extreme heat here in Vegas the cold water could shatter it, so I avoid the car wash.
Last night when I got home from dinner I took the action to clean them. It didn’t take very long, less than 5 minutes total and wow what a difference it makes now.
I couldn’t believe how much better (dare I say happier) I felt after cleaning them. One simple 5 minute task is all it took.
My lightbulb moment was when I realized that by having dirty, spotted windows I’ve not been seeing life clearly (on a physical or a spiritual level).
Okay I still need to deal with the cracked windshield and I will as soon as my financial picture improves.
I’m trying to pay attention to what shows up in my life and the meaning of it so last night I watched the movie The Answer Man starring Jeff Daniels and Lauren Graham.
The reason I probably put this movie on hold from the library was because Lauren Graham was in it. I loved her in Gilmore Girls so it was good to see her in something. If you are a Gilmore Girl fan then you might want to know that the dialog moves at a good pace but not as fast as it did on Gilmore Girls:)
The story line is about a reclusive author Arlen Faber (Jeff Daniels) who wrote a book “Me and God” which became a phenomenon and defined spirituality for a generation twenty years ago. On the eve of the 20th anniversary of the publication of the book (and all the spinoffs) his life collides with the lives of Elizabeth (Lauren Graham) and Kris (Lou Taylor Pucci).
Since I love used bookstores I was happily surprised to see a real used bookstore as one of the central locations for this movie.
It’s July 1st 2010, and I’m starting this blog to document my journey of creating health and happiness in my life.
My intentions for this blog are to keep myself accountable, have a record of my progress, tell it like it is in the moment, and perhaps even inspire someone (maybe you) to take action to create health and happiness in your life.
Health
Here are the facts:
I’m a 54 year old woman who is overweight, actually let’s call it what it really is, obese weighing 208 pounds
for my 5’4″ body frame (the reading on the scale is from today the first time in years I’ve dared to step on one).
I do no type of regular exercise.
I eat very poorly.
I pop several Acid Reducer tablets every day to manage my heartburn and, regularly take Naproxen to deal with the stiff and sore joints (was diagnosed with Lupus in 1978 and despite my lack of self care have had very few flare ups or symptoms over the years).
I have a prescription for the generic to Clexa (an anti-depression medication) but often forget to take it.
I was taking Ambien on a regular basis to sleep at night (after napping during the weekday afternoons or sleeping through the days on the weekend) but when my prescription ran out last week I decided it was time to make some changes in my life.
